YAMA

We had a sushi craving so we did some research and chose to dine at Yama in the Waverly shopping center.

We started off with a carafe of Dassai 50 which is a semi-dry sake. It had wonderful hints of fruit without coming off too sweet. Hands down the best sake I’ve ever had! I highly recommend enjoying this by the carafe or bottle with your meal.

We decided to try Gyoza or Japanese dumplings which are filled with meat and vegetables then wrapped in a thin dough. They were so, so good! We enjoyed them plain and dipped in the gyoza sauce which was a mixture of sour and sweet with hints of ginger.

Onto the sashimi which is a Japanese delicacy consisting of fresh raw fish sliced into thin pieces. The presentation was a mix between art and sushi.

I’ve never actually had sashimi but I’m so glad I finally did! At Yama, Chefs choose their daily fish specials based on what is in season and fresh that morning.  We enjoyed Japanese sea bass (Suzuki), salmon, halibut with lemon zest, bluefin tuna from Spain and fluke. It was hard to choose a favorite but if I had to it would be the suzuki or the tuna.

Their menu is so extensive, we couldn’t stop there! Next we had an assortment of Nigiri which is thin slices of raw fish pressed over rice. Included in our fresh assortment was sea bass, seared akami, yellow tail tuna, bluefin tuna, Japanese snapper, fluke, seared salmon belly with truffle oil and barracuda. The seared salmon and barracuda were

Another wonderful feature about sushi is it is so light, it left us with room to have more! We couldn’t turn down the Waverly roll. Made with tempura shrimp, torched salmon, shichimi seasoning (Japanese Cajun), jalapeño and unagi sauce. A true flavor explosion on your mouth! The perfect amount of spiciness!

Lastly, we had barely saved room for the green tea cheesecake imported from Japan but we are so glad we did. It was rich and creamy with delicious sweet green tea flavor. This may be my new favorite desert!
